Fitbit signs deal with Singapore: million citizens get fitness tracker

Fitbit is going to provide a million citizens from Singapore with Fitnesstrackers. The company reached a deal with the country’s government in Southeast Asia. The deal is part of the health program that launches the country in October.

The company will provide the trackers for free, but according to the deal, the users must then pay Fitbit for a year 10 Singapore dollar (SGD) per month (about 6.50 euros).

Several companies tried to get the deal, including “Big international players”, according to someone from the Ministry of Health.

The agreement is good news for the company that once pioneered the fitnesstrackers market. Over the past two years, companies such as Apple, Samsung and various budget providers were caught up with similar products.

After the announcement of the deal, the value of the Fitbit share rose for stock market opening by 8 percent.

Singapore has 5.6 million inhabitants, who have the highest life expectancy in the world. The country is also known for its accessible health care. However, Singapore has lately been worried about an increase in heart disease and diabetes among civilians.

The deal with Fitbit should therefore give the overall health a support in the back. People who sign up for a fitness tracker will also receive personal health advice, and are encouraged to eat healthy and sleep well.
