Freight transport in the Netherlands increased by 1.2 percent in 2018

The total freight transport in the Netherlands increased slightly to 1.71 billion tonnes in 2018. The increase of 1.2% was entirely on the account of lorries and sea shipping, evidenced by data from the Central Statistical Office (CBS).

Aircraft, inland waterway vessels and freight trains were transported less from, to and within the Netherlands. Of all 2018 transported goods, more than 44 percent of the weight was transported by lorries.

Sea-going vessels transported more than 35 percent of all goods and inland waterway transport was well over 18 percent. Rail transport and aviation contributed only very limited to the total freight transport.

Domestic freight transport increased by 3.5% to 681 million tonnes. Total cross-border freight transport fell in 2018 light, to nearly 1.04 billion tonnes.
