German Chancellor Merkel delivers May 5 lecture in The Hague

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will give the May 5 lecture this year, the National Information Service and the Committee 4 and 5 May will report on Thursday. This year’s theme is 75 years of freedom.

Merkel was asked by Prime Minister Mark Rutte and the committee to give the lecture. The reason for this is that “, imbued with history, they have been committed to peace, freedom and stability in Europe for many years,” the committee said.

This is not the first time a German politician has held the May 5 lecture. German Federal President Joachim Gauck  preceded Merkel in 2012.

After Merkel’s lecture, which will be held in The Hague, Rutte and Merkel speak to young people from both the Netherlands and Germany. This conversation is about the meaning of 75 years of freedom and “the responsibility for passing on freedom to future generations”.

Liberation Day concludes with the 5 May concert in Amsterdam. This concert takes place as in previous years on and around the Amstel for Royal Theatre Carré. Rutte will attend this event with King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima.

On 4 May, Commemoration of the dead, a commemorative meeting will be held in De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. Writer Arnon Grunberg will give the May 4 lecture there. Next will be the National Commemoration on the Dam, where the king will give a speech.
