Prices rise faster: inflation rises in April 2023

Life in the Netherlands rose by an average of 5.2 percent in April relative to one year previously. This was mainly due to the fact that energy prices fell less sharply last month than in March. The prices of groceries also rose again, but somewhat less strongly than in March.

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this  in a quick first estimate on Tuesday. An inflation rate of 5.2 percent means that products and services are on average 5.2 percent more expensive than one year previously.

The inflation rate is higher than in March, when inflation fell to 4.4 percent. In February, inflation was still 8.0 percent. At the peak in September last year, inflation was still 14.5 percent.

The average price increase of products in supermarkets was 13.2 percent last month, compared to 15.1 percent in March. Energy prices fell by nearly 22 percent. This is a smaller price drop than one month previously. Then the price of energy fell by 28 percent.

“Energy prices fell less sharply in April. Food prices are actually changing, because they are falling,” says Chief Economist Peter Hein van Mulligen of Cbs.

In order to make a good comparison with other European countries, CBS also provides inflation figures according to the European method. That figure, for example, does not take into account house rents. Inflation will then be 5.9 percent, down from 4.5 percent in March.
