The Netherlands was largest importer of cocoa beans in the world in 2018

The Netherlands imported over 1.1 billion kilos of cocoa beans in 2018, making the country the largest importer of the raw material in the world, evidenced by figures from the Central Statistical Office (CBS).

The amount of cocoa imported has doubled in the Netherlands in ten years time.

Half of the 1.1 billion cocoa beans originate from Ivory Coast. Other popular trading partners in the cocoa market are Ghana, Cameroon and Nigeria.

Three-quarters of the imported cocoa beans remain in the Netherlands, while the remaining 25% are resold directly to other countries.

The Netherlands is also a major player in the field of imports of other agricultural commodities. By weight, the Netherlands last year was the second largest importer of palm oil on Earth. In addition, the Netherlands imported most of the soybeans from all EU member States.
