Transavia cancels 42 flights to and from Southern Europe this week

Transavia will cancel 42 flights to and from Southern Europe from today until Sunday, a spokesman said. This concerns 21 return flights, departing to and from Schiphol and the airports of Rotterdam and Eindhoven. Transavia’s aircraft can accommodate an average of 189 passengers. This means that – if all flights are full – thousands of passengers will be affected. The spokesperson does not want to say exactly how many travelers will be affected by this. The airline has fewer aircraft available due to problems with some aircraft.

End of week clarity

“I understand that there are concerns,” a spokesman said. “We don’t like to do this either.” According to Transavia, today’s cancellations had already been announced on April 28. “We are now in the process of informing travellers for the entire month of May. We hope there will be clarity by the end of the week.”

Call
Are you a duped traveller who sees his holiday missed at the last minute due to the large number of cancelled flights? Or can’t fly back home? Send an email to rtlnieuws@rtl.nl with your phone number and name. Then we will be happy to contact you. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the airline will cancel three return flights a day. There will be five flights on Saturday and seven on Sunday. Last week, passengers were sometimes only told on the day of departure that their flight will not take place.

Working forward
Last week, Transavia reported that it would cancel trips in May and June well in advance. The budget airline of Air France-KLM is currently looking at which flights will be cancelled. “We want to work as much forward as possible,” the spokesman said. Currently, eight aircraft (out of 45) are grounded – an exceptional number. “That’s for all sorts of reasons: lightning strikes, collisions, three lease planes aren’t quite set up yet.” Normally, one or two aircraft are grounded.

Destinations
It concerns several destinations in Southern Europe, such as Nice, Malaga, Naples, Pisa and Porto, from Amsterdam, Eindhoven and Rotterdam.Travellers whose flights have been changed or cancelled can do three things: rebook to another date, request a refund or book a flight with another airline. Transavia reimburses these costs, provided that they are ‘reasonable and proportionate’.

What’s going on at Transavia?
Transavia has been dealing with problems due to a shortage of aircraft for some time. Many flights are cancelled and the airline also cancels flights in May and June. Due to the equipment shortage, Transavia has to cancel flights even in the event of minor setbacks. The shortage of aircraft is partly due to lightning and tin damage to two aircraft of the airline. In addition, the number of lease aircraft that Transavia counted on is disappointing.
